My family and I relocated from Mass to Tennessee at the end of October. We are living with my in laws and have a huge storage unit on the property that is LOCKED and that's where all of our stuff is. Well, some people apparently decided to go Christmas Shopping inn our storage unit. They stole every video game, our PS3, PS2, wii and Gamecube. They stole all of my jewelry (all fake) which included my fathers final heartbeat EKG in a glass vile, our lcd monitors, and random things like thumb drives.

I called the police and they took a statement on the phone yesterday. A detective called today and said she wouldn't be around this weekend but told me to email her a list of missing things and they would keep an eye out. Really?! How about you come by and LOOK at the mess they left? They broke the door knob off and snapped the latch leaving the lock intact. I am so upset... We moved in hopes of a SAFER and better life but this is NOT what we imagined. I could use any positive thoughts you all have. I am really regretting leaving everything I knew to move here into this...

For those who don't know me, I have a 12-year-old son and a 13 month old daughter. They stole these things KNOWING there were kids here. The stroller in the unit was a DEAD giveaway...

I am so sorry. frown
(My sis has gone through something similar where the neighborhood crackhead has broken into her house FOUR times, the last time wiping out pretty much everything.)

I would suggest calling local pawn shops and speaking to their owners. Maybe some of your stuff will show up there.

I agree with Blue.

The other thing to remember is many times people KNOW what's in the unit. (they say most times people are robbed it's someone that knows them....or so i read somewhere)

and it's a downright shame that people would do something like that, especially this time of year (if your wii was registered online, it may be possible to track it that way too.)

Thats horrible, As Lindar said if your game machines are registered you might be able to track them maybe.

My thing is its the Detectives Job to come out, I would be calling the commissioner and the mayer about the lack of interest in there citizens on Theft. They should have been down there taking pictures and getting fingerprints! Inexcusable police action! Since someone ruined your holidays I would be calling every 20 minutes to check on your case just to show them it is important to you.

Sorry to hear this. Unfortunately things like this can happen anywhere, good or bad neighbourhood.

I don't think I talked about it here, but a couple months ago on the night of my fiance's movie premiere, my mum's house was broken into and robbed. They clearly knew what they wanted as they went directly for her bedroom closet where all her jewelry is kept. They also likely knew she's had a jewelry store for over a decade now. They took tens of thousands of her personal jewelry (no store merch was in the house). I did her insurance paperwork, the numbers were devestating. Coupled with the fact that her insurance only covered a max of $5000 for jewelry, which didn't even cover ONE piece. Monetary value aside, it was the pieces that my father (he died when I was 9) and her parents (also deceased) had given her that were the real loss.

And she lives in a fantastic neighbourhood.

OMG that is terrible. I hate thieves with a passion. I have been robbed as well when i was living with someone years ago they broke in when we just walked out to go grocery shopping so it was someone in the area and they were watching. They took everything and anything that was worth of value. The best part was they jammed our door so bad we couldnt open it, we had to crawl in through the window to get in and that was when we noticed we were robbed. I have also been mugged twice when i was younger, (thank goodness not hurt)G-D does NOT like thieves, they will get theirs in the end. Hopefully get caught and i believe they will. Look on the bright side of it. At least NO one was hurt or killed for just "Items" even through some might be very personal to you, it is better to know certain things can be replaced and what can not stays in your heart which can never be taken.

oh man! people just disgust me sometimes! i hate theives! all of the houses and apartments i've ever lived in, except for i think ONE, was broken into at some point. and they were all in nice neighborhoods too! as a matter of fact, where we are now, in the last 3 years, we've been broken into 4 times..twice they didn't even get anything, apparently they just liked sifting through my panty drawer and making a disgusting, nasty "man mess" if you know what i mean. talk about scary!!! and good luck with the police, we've yet to recover anything that was taken any of the times, except what i recovered myself once when it turns out i knew the person who did it one of the times. i'm so sorry this has happened to you (and well, most everyone else on here too! wow!) frown

I am so sorry to hear this.
My nephew was just robbed.
He and his wife are very wealthy and the robbers took literally thousands in jewelry and other valuables.

Like the scum who robbed you, it was obvious this was no random act, as they live in half million dollar home in an exclusive neighborhood.

Death to thieves...

Again...so sorry.

The cops don't seem to care about the robberies in my sis's area. (At about the same time as the last robbery in her house, a neighbors' house was also robbed and their holiday gifts were stolen.)
I suggested that she write to/call (if you have email I would suggest that to) the local tv station and newspaper. Maybe the public seeing what is happening would get someone off of their ass.

Ugh. That sucks. frown I hate thieves. So many of us fall on hard times, but it takes a real piece of shit to go around stealing other people's stuff like they are somehow entitled to it.

Just the other day my partner had his car broken into. They stole some CDs, his check book and his photo I.D. badge for work (he works for the state). We found out the next day, that my friend's car across the street was also broken into, so I'm guessing the asshole just went though the entire parking lot.

I live in a wealthy part of town, though I am not wealthy. A lot of rich people live here, and there are police on every corner. You can't so much as walk down the street at night without being pulled over. They will ask what you are doing, and will follow you around if they feel you are bad news. I have a lot of respect for the cops here, and they did come here and take a report from my partner, but I think the reality is that most people never get their stuff back. Even if an officer was to come by and make you feel better about the situation, it wouldn't mean you had more of a chance of getting anything back. They just don't come dust for fingerprints and waste their time every time someone gets a T.V. or some CDs and games stolen. You know? It fucking sucks... but that's just the way it is, unfortunately. :\ It just happens so often... I doubt they even have the resources to do it. I mean, look at this post. It happens so often that most of us have our own story, or have been robbed multiple times ourselves. frown

Karma will catch up to them. ::huge hugs:: Just don't feel so bad about moving. Things like this happen everywhere.

Thanks, I know this is common for everyone, I guess I wouldve liked a little more effort. I don't care about the stuff (at least the stuff that I could replace) It's the violation that sucks. Knowing I was in my bed while people were shopping in what is ultimately, my house. They even took the damn christmas ornaments! I just want them to pay... I know its asking too much.

I'm so very sorry you're having to go through this. I despise cowards that prey on people homes. Snakes in the grass the lot of 'em. Thank goodness no one was harmed (except those pieces of shit of course.) Unfortunately this is the time of year when home/auto theft is extremely high. I didn't know about the game console internet registering/tracking. I'm going to have to do that today.

While no home I've ever lived in has been burgled or robbed, I was held up at gunpoint 4.5 years ago outside of a Ralphs grocery store. He tried to rob & carjack me (he was nice enough to let me load up the back of the Jeep with $200+ in groceries before he tried, scumbag.) I was able to bolt behind the Jeep, as it was tall & had tinted windows, & dash into the store, screaming my head off the whole time. He didn't get anything except a police helicopter chase.

Anything of value in our house is stored in our 6' tall Liberty Centurion safe that's bolted into concrete in our garage. Family heirlooms, legal paperwork, guns, jewelry, etc. We also have a full Brinks alarm system for the entire house. We're getting smash proof coating & a few smash sensors (for the nursery area) on our windows in a couple of months too. We live in a great neighborhood, but we are a corner house & they tend to get broken into much more often than nested homes.

We have a 3-car garage & the single unit that the safe is in has its own independent alarm system (that came with the house as the previous owner had a sick amount of power tools.)

The other ladies have given you some wonderful suggestions, especially the pawn shop one. You're right, that feeling of violation that lingers is awful. I can't say just how sorry I am. Good luck to you & your family. *hugs*

Jade, have you had any progress with finding out who broke into your storage unit?
I meant to ask, do you or your family have homeowners' ins?

Not to freak you out or anything but stay on your toes. Burglars love hitting the same place right after the tenants have replaced/upgraded their stolen items. Stay safe!
